Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) fue un poeta, novelista y periodista inglés que defendiera decididamente la vocación de predominio del Imperio Británico. En 1903, se convirtió en el primer escritor de esa nacionalidad en recibir el Premio Nobel de Literatura.

Sólo he leído de él un poema, If (el si condicional en inglés); ni siquiera el famoso Libro de la Selva. («El libro de la selva—título original en inglés: The Jungle Book—es una película de animación estadounidense estrenada en 1967, producida por Walt Disney Productions. Esta película se basa en los relatos de Mowgli, escritos por Rudyard Kipling». Wikipedia en Español). Por ese único poema admiro sus sentimientos y su postura general ante la vida.

Éstos son sus inspiradores versos en el inglés original:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
